More than 35 attendees gathered to learn more about wastewater pumping and grit removal during a FREE Wastewater Design School hosted by Smith & Loveless and Cornerstone H20 at Gwinnett County’s The Water Tower Aug. 23 (pictured above).

In attendance were employees from consulting firms Carter & Sloope, Ardurra, GWES, Hussey Gay Bell, Croy Engineering and Foothills Land Design.

Attendees from municipal public utilities included those from Athens-Clarke County, Gwinnett County, Fulton County, Dekalb County, and the Cities of Hartwell, Columbus, Loganville, Peachtree City, and Flowery Branch.

The 4-hour class had a wide variety of attendees including Consulting Engineers, EITs, Directors of Public Works and other Plant / Collection System Superintendents and Operators.

Smith & Loveless Sales Managers Alex Tabb and Jeff Hunninghake were the presenters for the event, sharing real design tips and useful insights gathered from decades of experience building wastewater pumping and grit removal systems.

Specific topics of interest covered during the pumping portion of the presentation included: understanding pump station hydraulics, alternatives to submersible design practices, and exploring asset management case studies of pumping systems.

Topics covered during the grit removal portion of the presentation included: differentiating between grit removal options, optimizing design practices for 95 percent grit removal, and analyzing the installation, energy and utility costs of grit removal systems.

The event was well received by those in attendance.

One attendee from Gwinnet County’s called the event “well-presented with knowledgeable instructors with real world working knowledge.”

Another attendee from Flowery Branch, GA commented: “The presenters had a lot of field experience that they shared about in the class. I learned some things from their experience.”
